Deck the Halls – How to decorate your home on a budget

DECKING

I absolutely love decorating for the holidays. Each year, I enjoy picking up  few new pieces to add to my collection. Doing so allows me to switch things up and exercise my creativity. Since shopping for holiday home décor can easily become expensive, I often shop for small items with a DIY mindset. Three years ago, I started decorating my kitchen for the holidays. Well, I actually strung some lights above my sink and tied up some ornaments, only I never took them down because I love them so much. The lights and ornaments compliment the scrap fabric I have up and give the space a kitschy feel.

On a recent shopping trip to Family Dollar, I found some great items for this year’s holiday decorating. I found an assortment of glitter stick-on flowers to go above my quirky sink display. I have so many other ideas for them, too, like using them in a wreath, tablescape, napkin rings, or gift wrap.

For the corner of our breakfast nook, I found a miniature Christmas tree set and nutcracker figurine. The tree includes all decorations: ornaments, garland, battery-powered lights, and skirt. I opted to for the funky blue and lime color scheme to match my kitchen. Family Dollar offers a more traditional red and green tree set as well. The tree sets and nutcrackers are great in any space. They can add a little cheer to kids bedrooms – even in the classroom. Teacher’s gift, hello!

Growing up, my mom always set out a bowl of fruit, nuts and candy. That was my inspiration when I spotted a frosted dish. I grabbed some of my favorite chocolate candies to display inside.

While browsing for candy, I found some glitter snowflake ornaments that I decided to hang from my living room ceiling. The gold and soft blue matches our living room décor and looks great sharing space with white lights and a paper garland I am working on. I replaced the string from the ornaments with twine and hung them up using mini Command Hooks.

Shopping for holiday decorations for the home doesn’t have to be complicated or financially grueling if you shop smart. In the end, it’s all about creating traditions and loving on our families. I absolutely love our new holiday digs. I’m totally feeling the Holiday spirit! I hope these holiday decorating ideas inspire you to deck the halls for less! Let your creativity run wild and have a joyous time this season!
